How to use the Fitrana calculator
Enter how many people you are paying for — yourself and everyone whose fitrana you give, such as your spouse and children. Choose the food you are basing it on, type today's price of one kilogram of that food in your local market, and press Calculate Fitrana. You will see the amount per person, the total for the family, and how many kilograms that is if you prefer to give the grain itself.
Ghar ke afraad ki ginti likhein, gehun ya khajoor ka 1 kg ka bhav daalein — poore ghar ka fitrana turant.
What is Sadaqat-ul-Fitr?
Zakat-ul-Fitr (fitrana, sadaqat-ul-fitr) is a small charity paid at the end of Ramadan. Ibn 'Umar narrated: "Allah's Messenger ﷺ enjoined the payment of one Sa' of dates or one Sa' of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr on every Muslim slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he ordered that it be paid before the people went out to offer the 'Id prayer" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1503). So it is due for every family member, including children, and the head of the household normally pays for those in his care; Ibn 'Umar used to pay for young and old, even for the children of his freed slave Nafi', who narrated it (Sahih al-Bukhari 1511).
Half a sa' of wheat or one sa' of dates?
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri said that in the Prophet's ﷺ time they gave one sa' of food, dates, barley or raisins; when Mu'awiya became caliph and wheat became plentiful, he said that one mudd of it equals two mudds of the others (Sahih al-Bukhari 1508). Ibn 'Umar also reports that "the people then substituted half Sa' of wheat for that" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1511). On this basis the Hanafi school, followed by most Muslims in India and Pakistan, takes half a sa' of wheat, and a full sa' of dates, barley or raisins. Other schools hold that a full sa' is due whatever the food, so if you follow another school, use the one-sa' options.
The weights used here
A sa' is a measure of volume, not weight, so its weight in kilograms is an estimate and scholars give different figures. This calculator uses figures commonly cited in South Asia: 1.633 kg for half a sa' of wheat and 3.266 kg for one sa' of dates, barley or raisins. Other estimates exist — the English note on Sahih al-Bukhari 1503 at sunnah.com, for example, gives one sa' as about 3 kg — and some committees round the weight up as a precaution. Every year, local darul iftas and Ruet-e-Hilal or Zakat committees announce a per-person amount based on local prices. If your local scholars have announced an amount, pay that.
When and to whom
Pay before the Eid prayer, as the hadith commands. The Companions also used to give it a day or two before Eid (Sahih al-Bukhari 1511), which lets it reach poor families in time for their own Eid. In the Hanafi school paying the value in money is accepted, which is why this calculator works in rupees and dollars; if you are unsure what your school allows, give food or ask your scholar.
Important: This tool gives general guidance. Har shakhs ka maamla alag ho sakta hai — apne personal case ke liye kisi mustanad local aalim ya mufti se zaroor mashwara karein.
FAQ / Aksar pooche jaane wale sawal
How much is fitrana per person this year?
It depends on your local price of wheat, dates, barley or raisins. Multiply 1.633 kg (wheat) or 3.266 kg (dates, barley, raisins) by the price per kg. Local scholars and committees also announce an amount each year — follow that if one has been announced.
Who has to pay fitrana?
Sahih al-Bukhari 1503 says it is due on every Muslim, young or old, male or female. The head of the family usually pays for those he supports, including children. Conditions such as owning wealth above your needs differ between schools, so ask your scholar about your case.
Can I pay fitrana in cash?
In the Hanafi school, followed by most Muslims in India and Pakistan, paying the value in money is accepted. Other schools prefer food. Follow the opinion of your scholar.
What is the last time to pay fitrana?
It should be paid before the Eid prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari 1503). The Companions also paid a day or two before Eid (Sahih al-Bukhari 1511), which helps it reach the poor in time.
