How to use the Hijri date converter
The box at the top shows today's Islamic date automatically. To convert any other date, pick a Gregorian (English) date on the left and press Convert, or enter a Hijri day, month and year on the right to find the matching Gregorian date. The weekday is shown as well, which helps when planning a fast, a nikah or a family function on a specific day.
Example: apni paidaish ki Islamic tareekh jaanni hai? Left side mein birthday chunein aur Convert dabaiye.
How the Islamic calendar works
The Hijri calendar is lunar. Allah says: "Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months" (Quran 9:36). Each month has 29 or 30 days, so a Hijri year is about 354–355 days — roughly 11 days shorter than the solar year. That is why Ramadan and Eid move earlier every year on the English calendar. Year 1 AH begins with the Hijrah of the Prophet ﷺ from Makkah to Madinah.
An Islamic day begins at sunset (Maghrib), not midnight. So the evening before a date on this page already counts as that Hijri date for things like the first taraweeh.
Why the date can differ by one day
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Start fasting on seeing the crescent, and give up fasting on seeing the crescent, and if the sky is overcast, complete thirty days of Sha'ban" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1909). Communities in India and Pakistan generally begin months by local sighting, while this tool uses Saudi Arabia's calculated Umm al-Qura calendar, built into your browser. Most of the time the dates match or are one day apart. For Ramadan, Eid and other important dates, always follow the announcement of your local moon-sighting committee.
Important: This tool gives general guidance. Har shakhs ka maamla alag ho sakta hai — apne personal case ke liye kisi mustanad local aalim ya mufti se zaroor mashwara karein.
FAQ / Aksar pooche jaane wale sawal
Which calendar does this converter use?
It uses the Umm al-Qura calendar through your browser's built-in Intl support (islamic-umalqura). It is accurate for that calendar between roughly 1300 and 1600 AH.
Why is the Hijri date in India or Pakistan different by one day?
Months there usually begin with local moon sighting, while Umm al-Qura is a calculated calendar. The difference is normally one day. Follow your local Ruet-e-Hilal announcement for religious dates.
When does the Islamic day start?
The Islamic day starts at sunset (Maghrib). So the night before a Gregorian date already belongs to the next Hijri day.
Why does Ramadan come about 11 days earlier every year?
The Hijri year has 12 lunar months, about 354–355 days, which is roughly 11 days shorter than the 365-day solar year.
